The punctuation mark appears frequently in outputs from ChatGPT and other AI chatbots, sometimes to the point where readers believe they can identify AI writing by its overuse alone\u2014although people can overuse it, too.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday evening, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sama\/status\/1989193813043069219?s=20\">posted<\/a> on X that ChatGPT has started following custom instructions to avoid using em dashes. \u201cSmall-but-happy win: If you tell ChatGPT not to use em-dashes in your custom instructions, it finally does what it\u2019s supposed to do!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The post, which came two days after the release of OpenAI\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/ai\/2025\/11\/openai-walks-a-tricky-tightrope-with-gpt-5-1s-eight-new-personalities\/\">GPT-5.1<\/a> AI model, received mixed reactions from users who have <a href=\"https:\/\/community.openai.com\/t\/cannot-get-responses-to-not-include-dashes-and-em-dashes\/1023216\/7\">struggled<\/a> for years with getting the chatbot to follow specific formatting preferences.
