Since the first screwworm cases were <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/health\/2026\/06\/flesh-eating-screwworm-infection-detected-in-south-texas-usda-says\/\">detected in South Texas<\/a> in June, the US Department of Agriculture and US Customs and Border Protection have been conducting \u201cone of the most extensive animal-health surveillance operations in the country,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Screwworm_RR\/status\/2086846942387036495\">according to the USDA<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/USDAAPHIS\/posts\/secretary-rollins-is-reviewing-the-technology-supporting-one-of-the-most-extensi\/1073665485182547\/\">social media posts<\/a> on platforms like X and Facebook on August 10.<\/p>\n<p>The effort involves at least 200 drones owned by the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency.
