A security review says the Kubernetes API server is reachable through a NodePort, and you have to put it back behind a ClusterIP Service. The fix is one line in a static pod manifest, but there is a second step almost everyone misses: the API server does not change the type of a Service that already exists. We run the whole thing on a real kubeadm control plane, including what an anonymous request can read through that NodePort.<\/p>\n<p>The default kubernetes Service in the default namespace is created and maintained by the API server itself. The kube-apiserver flag &#8211;kubernetes-service-node-port makes that Service a NodePort, which opens the API server on a high port on every node. Even without credentials, anonymous requests to \/version return the exact build, which is useful reconnaissance for an attacker. The fix is on the control plane node: back up \/etc\/kubernetes\/manifests\/kube-apiserver.yaml to a directory OUTSIDE the manifests folder, remove the flag, and let the kubelet restart the static pod. The API server only sets the type when it creates the Service, so the existing NodePort stays until you delete the kubernetes Service; the API server recreates it within seconds as ClusterIP.
