How to Check Whether a Trading Bot Will Be Profitable | How to Read a Backtest [Beginner’s Guide]

You’ve built a bot, clicked “Test,” and now you’re looking at a screen full of charts and numbers: Profit, MPP, MDD, Net, Gross, percentages, tabs. The question is simple: what should you actually be looking at?

In this video, we take a real backtest from the Veles Finance dashboard and break down virtually every metric: what it means, where it comes from, and what it tells you about the strategy. By the end, you’ll be able to read any backtest — not just on our platform, but on any other algorithmic trading service.

What we cover:

— Backtest overview: profit, MPP (Maximum Floating Profit), MDD (Maximum Floating Drawdown), average trade, and test duration
— “Profit” section: the difference between Gross and Net, exchange fees, daily performance, and the spread between the best and worst trades
— “Trades” section: number of trades, trading volume, take-profits, and stop-losses
— “Candles” section: exchange, timeframe, trading pair, number of bars, and candle-wick statistics — and how they relate to stop-loss size
— “Time” section: average, maximum, and minimum time in a trade
— “Charts” tab: cumulative profit, executed grid and multi-take orders, and win rate
— “Trades” tab: PNL, Net PNL, and fees for each position, plus how the averaging grid performs
— “Settings” tab: the bot’s complete configuration, grid spacing, order sizes, and indicator filters
— Two backtesting nuances that aren’t visible in the interface but can significantly affect the final results

This video will be useful if you’re just getting started with algorithmic trading, setting up your first Grid or DCA bot, testing a crypto trading strategy, or simply trying to understand which backtest results are reasonable and which should make you double-check your settings.
