I thought my coding skills would make algorithmic trading easy. So, I started by programming standard “book-opening” indicators, RSI, MACD, basic crossovers.

In theory, they looked like magic. But in practice? My first bots bought the absolute top and sold the absolute bottom. They had almost zero positive effect in my live strategies.

I learned very quickly that textbook theory and real market execution are two entirely different worlds. These days our dquants backtests subtract commission, spread and slippage on real tick data before any indicator is allowed to look like an edge, exactly the reality check those first bots never got.
