Every engineering role solves different problems, so naturally, the language behind it is different too.
Here’s a good starting point:
• Data Engineering → SQL
• DevOps → Go
• Security Engineering → Python
• Systems Engineering → Rust
• AI / ML → Python
• AI Infrastructure → CUDA
A quick note:
This isn’t an exhaustive list, and there isn’t only one “correct” language for each role. Many engineers use multiple languages throughout their careers.
If you already know one programming language well, don’t start from scratch. The core programming fundamentals:
variables, loops, functions, data structures, algorithms, debugging, and problem-solving, transfer across languages. Learning the next one becomes much easier.
Also, CUDA isn’t a programming language by itself. It’s a parallel computing platform and programming model that lets you write GPU-accelerated code (typically with C/C++ and also through Python libraries). If you’re interested in AI infrastructure, learning CUDA programming can help you understand how modern AI workloads are optimized on GPUs.
The best language is the one that helps you build projects in the field you want to work in.
