In June 2000 Microsoft unveiled C#, a new language designed by Danish engineer Anders Hejlsberg, creator of Turbo Pascal and Delphi. It was born after Sun Microsystems sued Microsoft over Java in 1997 and a judge ordered Microsoft’s Java back into line. The Cool project became C#, the heart of .NET, launched with Visual Studio .NET in 2002.

Generics designed at Microsoft Research Cambridge, Mono, the open-sourcing of .NET in 2014 and the Unity engine from Copenhagen took C# into Monument Valley, Two Point Hospital and Football Manager 26. Did you write C#? Tell us in the comments.
